Characteristics

Aquamarine has a rich transparent colour, most commonly Pale Blue but also Greenish Blue or Sky Blue.  It is the most flawless of all the crystals and possesses excellent clarity and transparency.  A fairly hard stone, it is a member of the Beryl family of stones which also includes Emerald.

Origins

The name Aquamarine originates from the words Agua, meaning water and Marina, meaning the sea, making the name Water of the Sea.  Due to the origins of the name it is said to protect sailors and guarantee a safe sea voyage, making it the perfect gift for sailors or those who enjoy cruising.

Brazil, Zambia, Madagascar, Ukraine, Nigeria.

The largest example of a cut Aquamarine was found in Brazil during the 1980’s and is called the Dom Pedro Aquamarine, it stands at 35cm tall, 10cm wide at the base and weighs a whopping 10,363 carats (approx. 4.6lbs) it is d0isplayed at the Museum of Natural History in the Smithsonian Institute, USA.

Care

1. Whenever possible put your Aquamarine jewellery on after applying any lotions, perfumes or sprays and remove when doing the dishes or other tough jobs such as gardening.

2. Clean your Aquamarine jewellery using shop bought jewellery cleaner or with mild soap and warm water, scrub gently with a soft toothbrush, rinse in warm water and dry using a soft cloth, a sonic cleaner can also be used.
