Characteristics

Pearls can be found in a wide range of colours, should be perfectly round and mostly blemish free. The most valuable natural Pearls are the largest ones and those with the most lustre (shine).

Origins

The Latin name for Pearl means 'Precious'. Pearls can be both NATURAL (made by nature, found in oyster shells), CULTURED (farmed by oyster farmers in controlled conditions) or SYNTHETIC (made out of non natural materials, glass, plastic etc).

Pearls are said to be closely connected to the moon, in ancient times it was widely believed that Pearls were teardrops from the moon which had fallen into the sea.

Pearls signify youthfulness, chastity, modesty, purity, peace, mobility, beauty and a happy marriage.

Care

Everyday use of products such as perfume, hair spray, cosmetics, sun cream and even sweat can dull the lustre (shine) of pearls, follow these simple steps to keep Pearls looking beautiful.

It is advisable to leave at least 30 minutes after applying any products before wearing Pearls.

After each wear simply wipe Pearls with a clean soft cloth to remove any build up of chemicals or sweat.

Store Pearls seperately from harder jewellery, preferably in a soft cloth pouch or soft lined box.

Have Pearls restrung periodically, especially if showing signs of wear, if unsure bring them in to us for a free appraisal and we can advise if this is necessary.
